Notation: Bhatkhande and Paluskar
Two North Indian systems — and the difference between what notation records and what the hand does.
Two systems
North Indian theory uses two main notations. Bhatkhande marks sam with ×, khali with 0, later talis with numerals, and separates the vibhags. The Vishnu Digambar / Paluskar system marks a tali by the matra number and khali with a plus sign, with additional signs for fractional matras.

What notation does not encode
Notation records structure and bol placement, not the biomechanics of the hand. The presence of duration terms in the Paluskar system must not be read as importing modern Carnatic finger-count actions into Hindustani practice.
