What is Tabla Focus?
Tabla Focus is a tabla practice companion for iPhone and iPad, built for your life in tabla.
Most tabla apps are a single tool — a lehra, a loop machine, or a tanpura. Those are all here, but elevated: a harmonium lehra with advanced layakari, the Taal Metronome, a tanpura, Tap Layakari, and Tabla Math for the arithmetic behind a tihai or chakradhar. But the lehra was never the hard part. The hard part is everything around it.
So the practice itself lives here. Your repertoire — kaidas, tukras, relas and more — is written in the tabla's own bol notation, and every piece moves from first look to Performance Ready, so the next thing to work on is the first thing you see. Scan years of handwritten notes into one private archive you can always reach. Record your practice and performances, trim each take, and file it against the piece it belongs to. And track every part of your riyaz — read back by taal, by week, by year, and gathered each month into a Progress Report.
When a grade is coming, the Mock Exam holds a full sitting — theory, padhant, practical — pitched to the stage you're preparing, as the major boards set it. A rehearsal, never a verdict on your playing. Atlas keeps the lineage close: the masters, the gharanas, and the recordings behind the tradition.

Can tabla be learned independently, without a teacher?
न गुरोरधिकं तत्त्वं न गुरोरधिकं तपः।

The short answer is no. Within this tradition, it is a settled truth that tabla is not mastered without the living guidance of a Guru, and Tabla Focus never pretends to replace that relationship. Instead it works as an earnest, relentless gurubhai — a practice peer built to make the solitary hours of riyaz count. It meets the hardest realities of the art head-on: the pull on motivation, the struggle for consistency, the sheer difficulty of tracking decades of progress. Does Tabla Focus have a lehra (nagma)?
Yes — in three voices. Handpicked traditional lehra melodies on the harmonium, each in its raag and taal, holding tempo wherever you set it. Sangat: the lehra as a human voice — sung, not played — for practising your accompaniment to bhajans, ghazals, thumris and more, the performer credited as it plays. And an advanced Taal Metronome for the cycle itself.
Its real strength, though, is the intelligence built around the cycle. The Lehra and the metronome both carry dynamic, layakari-based cues and laya automation — shape the tempo across the aavartan, and hear a chosen laya, dugun to tigun to aad, over the theka. And both feed your practice record: a riyaz is never just a block of time, and Analytics shows how much focused riyaz went into a given technique or piece. It's less a lehra app with a practice companion attached, and more the reverse.

Is the Mock Exam affiliated with a tabla examination board?
No. The Mock Exam's stage syllabus is based on the published syllabi of Prayag Sangeet Samiti and Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, distilled into one board-neutral approximation of each stage. Tabla Focus is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a partner of either board. Syllabi vary by board and year — always check your own board's current prospectus.

Is Tabla Focus free?
No. Tabla Focus is a subscription app, and one thing in it is free for good: the basic Taal Metronome. Choose a taal, set a tempo, and practise. Anyone anywhere in the world with an iPhone or iPad can do that, with no trial clock running out.
Everything else runs on weekly and annual subscriptions: Advanced analytics and the Lifetime Progress Report, your Scanned Notes synced through your own iCloud, compositions in bol notation you can share as .tabla files, your own recordings filed by piece, layakari cues and laya automation, the harmonium lehra, Sangat (vocal lehra), the mastery arc, Atlas, and the focused tools around them — Tanpura, Tap Layakari, Laya Check, Tabla Math, the Taal Guide, and the Mock Exam.

Is Tabla Focus available on Android or the web?
Tabla Focus is built natively for iPhone and iPad, so it can invest deeply in what the platform offers: Sign in with Apple; your Compositions and Scanned Notes synced privately through your own iCloud; Siri and Shortcuts to start a riyaz hands-free; a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island; Home Screen widgets; and on-device listening for Laya Check that never leaves the device. Building for one platform deeply beats building for three thinly. There's no Android or web version today — not ruled out, but iOS comes first.

Can custom compositions be created and shared in the library?
Yes — the repertoire is a musician's treasure, and Tabla Focus is built to hold it for a lifetime. Transcribe kaidas, relas, tukras, and phrases with the on-device bol keyboard, each held with its taal and context, and follow every piece from Study Reserve to Performance Ready. Finished compositions take their place in a printable, real-book style Set List — a living archive of your own collection, written in the tabla's own notation, kept for years. Tabla Focus also has its own .tabla file format: share any composition with another Tabla Focus player over AirDrop, messaging, or any share sheet, and they can import it straight into their own Library to save, practise, or edit.

Yes, and it's designed to be measured in years, not days. Every riyaz, minute, active day, and taal-by-taal breakdown goes into one private record, and Analytics opens it from the strip beneath Start Practice. At the end of each month, Analytics reads it back as plain observations, and the Activity Map shows the shape of your practice at a glance. For the long view, a Lifetime Progress Report gathers it all into a PDF. Above all, the record is personal — no leaderboards, no rankings, no comparisons. A quiet, enduring account of riyaz that belongs to the player alone.

Does Tabla Focus play tabla bols or judge technique?
No — Tabla Focus supports the architecture of practice rather than passing verdict on technique. The acoustic beauty of the instrument, and the final judgment of tone, stay a matter between the player and their Guru. For live feedback the app offers Laya Check, which listens through the microphone strictly to mirror timing — entirely on-device, in real time, without ever recording, storing, or transmitting audio. Any technology that listens does so privately, and exists to guide, never to judge.

Does Tabla Focus work offline?
Yes. Tabla Focus is built offline-first — the Taal Metronome, Lehra, tanpura, your composition library, and your entire practice record work without an internet connection, because riyaz shouldn't wait on a Wi-Fi signal. The moment the device is back online, everything syncs quietly and securely to your private iCloud account.
Privacy & data
Is data kept private?
Yes. Privacy is a foundational design choice, not a setting. You sign in with Apple, so there's no separate password to manage, and your practice history stays bound to your own private account — no ads, no advertising or tracking SDKs, and your data is never sold.
Your compositions and Scanned Notes live exclusively in your own private iCloud storage. Laya Check analyses timing live, entirely on-device, without ever recording, transcribing, or saving a second of audio. We do keep pseudonymous product analytics — which tools get opened, never your notation or note contents — to decide what to build next, and you can turn analytics off in Settings → Your Data at any time. Data only leaves when you decide to take it — export it from Settings → Your Data, or delete your account permanently from Settings → Account → Delete Account.
