Tabla Care and Maintenance: What Protects the Tone

Do these five steps after every session.

  1. Wipe both heads with a dry, soft cloth.
  2. Wipe from the centre of the syahi outward to the rim, in straight lines.
  3. Leave the drums uncovered for five to ten minutes.
  4. Look across each syahi under good light. Look for lifted edges.
  5. Play na, tin and ge. Compare the tone to yesterday.

Do not use water. Do not use oil. Do not use a damp cloth.

These steps take two minutes. They protect the one part of the tabla that makes it a musical instrument and not a noise.

Why the syahi decides the tone

Most heads produce inharmonic overtones. The tabla does not. In 1934, C. V. Raman published a study of Indian drums at the Indian Institute of Science. He wrote that these instruments hold "the solution in a practical form of the acoustical problem of transforming a circular drum-head giving inharmonic overtones into a harmonic musical instrument."[1]

Raman named two causes for the sustained tone. The first cause is the heavy wooden shell. The second cause is "the symmetrical loading of the latter by a firmly adherent composition."[1] That composition is the syahi.

Raman also explained why mass matters. A head on a light frame cannot vibrate for long, because the frame absorbs the movement. The heavy shell does not absorb it. He wrote that the load on the head "greatly increases the energy of vibration."[1]

This gives every care rule a reason. The syahi is not decoration. It is the component that makes the dayan harmonic. If the syahi lifts, cracks through, or absorbs water, the instrument loses the property Raman measured.

Raman recorded one more detail that players rarely hear. Instruments differ in "the exact area and distribution of the central load", and also in the width of the marginal ring of skin left over the vibrating head.[1] That ring is the chat. Its width changes the tone. This is why a strike on the chat is serious. See "The tuning hammer" below.

Cracks in the syahi are normal

A new player sees fine cracks across the syahi and expects a defect. The opposite is true.

David Courtney is a tabla scholar and maker who has published on the instrument for decades. On syahi quality he writes: "It is especially important that it have a tight grain of cracks." He continues: "The density of the cracks represents the degree of flexibility. A high density is very desirable."[2]

What matters is the pattern, not the presence of cracks. Many fine cracks spread evenly across the surface are normal, and a sign of a good syahi. A few wide cracks in place of that fine grain mean the opposite: the syahi has gone dry and stiff, and it is worth watching over the following weeks. An edge that lifts away from the skin is not a crack at all but a fault, because it changes how the head vibrates. A dull, powdery patch is usually the least of these; it is generally a cleaning problem, so clean the head correctly and check the tone again before you worry.

Do not press a lifted edge down, and do not put glue under it. Both usually make the fault worse.

The water rule, stated exactly

Some care pages advise you to moisten a dry head with water or a damp cloth. Do not follow that advice. It can destroy the head.

The rule is not "never use water" in every context. Makers use water when they fit and patch a skin. The rule is about distance. Courtney is exact: "even a slight amount of water under the syahi will permanently damage the puddi." He instructs the reader to "leave at least 3/4 of an inch between the area where water is applied and the area where the syahi starts."[2]

Another reference guide states the same limit more bluntly: "Under any circumstances, never put water on the syahi's side!"[3]

So the rule for a player is simple. Water never touches the syahi, and never touches the skin near the syahi. Repair work that needs water belongs to a maker.

Powder goes on your hands

Powder controls the moisture on your fingers. It is not a treatment for the tabla.

Use a small quantity on your hands. Excess powder collects at the kinar and on the syahi edge. It then bakes into the surface and reduces the tone. Players report this problem often on tabla forums, and the removal is difficult.

Do not apply powder to the head to keep it dry. Do not apply more powder to correct a dull tone. A dull tone has a different cause.

A buzz: preference or fault

A buzz is the most common complaint, and the answer depends on the buzz.

A small buzz can be a matter of taste. One long-standing tabla store, formerly the Ali Akbar College store, writes: "It is a matter of taste, but some people want a small amount of buzz in their tabla." The same page compares it to the jawari of a sitar or a tanpura.[4]

A loud buzz is different. The same source states: "A loud buzz is annoying and can signify that the head is on its way out."[4]

Find the cause before you act:

  1. Move all loose objects away from the drums. This is a frequent false alarm.
  2. Hold the tabla up to the light. Look for a small area that vibrates on its own.[4]
  3. If you find one loose particle, you can treat that particle only.

For a single loose particle, Courtney describes the accepted repair: "place a tiny drop of white glue or super glue to bind it to an adjacent particle."[2]

Now the warning. Do not treat the whole syahi. The store's guidance is direct: "Do not put glue or polish over the entire gob or you will kill the resonance of the entire drum."[4]

Humidity, heat and storage

No page in this subject covers storage properly, so here is the reasoning.

The skin is animal hide. Hide absorbs and releases water with the air around it. When the skin takes up moisture, it becomes slack and the pitch falls. When the skin dries, it becomes tight and brittle. Repeated large swings tire the material and the syahi bond.

The rules follow from that. Keep the drums out of direct sun and away from a radiator or a heater. Do not store them in a loft, an attic or a conservatory, where trapped heat can split a head.[5] Keep them in a bag, add a blanket in a cold or damp climate, and let the heads cool and dry before you close it.[5]

Loosen the tension after a session if you tune the dayan high. This releases the constant stretch on the skin.[6] And give a new or repaired head a settling period rather than forcing it to pitch immediately.[6]

Some pages recommend a hairdryer on low heat to raise the pitch of a damp head before a performance. Other pages warn that heat cracks the syahi and splits heads. The sources disagree. If you use heat at all, use it briefly and at a distance, and never point it at the syahi.

The tuning hammer

The hammer moves the tension. It has one target.

Courtney states the limit and the consequence together: "It is very important that one strikes only the gajara with the hammer. An accidental strike against the chat will irreparably damage the tabla!"[2]

Raman's measurements explain the severity. The width of the marginal ring of skin changes the tone of the instrument.[1] A hammer strike on the chat changes that ring permanently.

Strike the gajara. Move around the head in small steps. Check the pitch between strikes.

When the pudi is finished

A head has a service life. The life depends on the climate, the hours you play, and the pitch you hold.

The store cited above puts the range at months to years. It also reports a difference by style: a thicker Bombay-style head lasts about one to three years, and a Calcutta head wears faster.[4]

A few signs together indicate the end of service life. The tone stays dull even after correct cleaning. The head no longer holds pitch between sessions. A loud buzz comes back after a spot repair. And the syahi lifts across a large area rather than at one small edge. One of these on its own may be fixable; together they mean the pudi is finished.

No published source gives a re-skinning cost. Prices depend on the maker, the country and the head style. Ask a maker for a quote, and compare that quote to the price of a new pair.

What you cannot repair at home

This is the boundary that shop guides blur.

You can do these tasks:

  • Clean the heads.
  • Check and adjust the straps and the gattas.
  • Tune with the hammer on the gajara.
  • Treat one loose syahi particle with a very small quantity of glue.

Do not attempt these tasks:

  • A rebuild of a damaged syahi. Experienced players on tabla forums agree that paste repairs are not permanent, and that full tone returns only when a maker fits a new pudi.
  • A patch on a split head.
  • Any work that needs water near the syahi.
  • Any adhesive across the syahi surface.

A maker charges less than a ruined pair costs.

Travel

No guide addresses tabla travel specifically. Airline and instrument advice covers guitars and violins. The tabla has different risks.

Prepare the drums before you fly. Reduce the tension a little, because pressure and temperature both change in the hold. Pack each tabla so the head cannot take a direct impact, and keep the two syahi surfaces apart so the heads never press together. The hammer travels in checked baggage, not in the cabin. On arrival, let the drums reach room temperature before you tune them, and expect to retune once the change of climate has moved the pitch.

A dent in the bayan shell from transport does not always change the sound.[4] Check the tone before you assume damage.

Questions players ask

Why does my tabla sound dull? The usual causes are powder on the syahi, moisture in the skin, or a syahi that has begun to lift. Clean the head correctly first. Then compare the tone again.

Is a small buzz normal? It can be. Some players want a small buzz, and compare it to jawari.[4] A loud buzz that returns after a repair means the head is near the end of its life.[4]

Can I clean the tabla with water? No. Water near the syahi permanently damages the pudi.[2] Use a dry, soft cloth.

How long does a head last? Months to years. A thicker Bombay-style head lasts about one to three years. A Calcutta head wears faster.[4]

Are cracks in the syahi a defect? No. A tight, dense grain of cracks is a sign of quality.[2] A lifted edge is the fault to watch.

Should I loosen the straps after playing? Loosen them if you tune high. This removes the constant stretch on the skin.[6]

Can I repair the syahi myself? You can treat one loose particle with a very small drop of glue.[2] You cannot rebuild a damaged syahi. That work needs a maker.
