Lucknow Gharana

The dance-fed eastern school — source of the gat tradition and Kathak's drumming language.

Founded by the brothers Modu Khan and Bakhshu Khan, who left Delhi for Lucknow's court culture in the eighteenth century. Shaped by daily work with Kathak dance and the pakhawaj, the school fathered the Purab aesthetic: open full-handed strokes, magnificent gats and parans, and rela invention.

Lucknow's repertoire is compositional wealth — showpieces built for presentation — and its dance connection left permanent marks on tabla's language. Farrukhabad descends from it by marriage and talim; Benares through its founder's training.
