Sourcing
The structure and theka on this page come from the sources this project works from. A note with no source number is still being checked.
Demo sound: manjira samples recorded by Tejus and Geetha for Tabla Focus.
Theka
ClapWave (khali)
Keeping it
Clap on 1, 6 and 11. Wave on 8. Nothing structural falls on the other matras.
Structure
Asymmetric 5-2-3-4 with rests ('S') built in; the gaps give dhamar its striding gait. Genre-bound: it names the dhrupad-dhamar (Holi/hori) style.
Sources differ
Vibhaag split (5+2+3+4) is asymmetric and the theka includes rests ('S'). Associated with Holi/hori repertoire in the dhrupad-dhamar genre. Theka has notational variants — flag for sourced pass.
Origins
A pakhawaj dhrupad taal that gives its name to the dhamar genre (Holi songs). Old lineage within the dhrupad tradition.
Often misread
Dhamar's khali is on the 10th matra.
With the standard 5-2-3-4 division the khali (0) falls on matra 8 (start of the 3rd vibhaag); tali on 1, 6, 11. The '10th matra' claim (seen on some quiz sites) does not match the sourced structure.
