Deliberate play with rhythmic proportion inside a steady tala. It spans doubling and tripling the rate (dugun, tigun, chaugun), fractional rates like aad (3 over 2), kuad (5 over 4), and biad (7 over 4), and the displacement of phrases against the count.
This is where arithmetic becomes musicianship. The tala never bends; the material stretches and compresses against it, and every excursion must resolve on a landmark the listener can verify. Vocalists and instrumentalists practice it too, but tabla players are its specialists — bol bant and tihai design are layakari applied to composition.
